Alaska Call Centers

Alaska is the largest state of United States of America by area. Approximately half of Alaska’s residents reside within the Anchorage area. As of 2007, Alaska still remains as the least densely populated state.

The area that became Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire. This was after Western Union stopped construction of its first electric telegraph line. Russia did not see the potential in the funding so Alaska was offered in exchange for the value of the Russian-American telegraph. The Russians feared that if they did not sell Russian North America, it would be taken from them by the westward expansion of the United States and Canada. They tried to play one potential purchaser off against the other to start a bidding war, but were largely unsuccessful.

Alaska has more coastline than all of the other US states combined. Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, though located on the mainland of the North American continent is inaccessible by land – no roads connect Juneau to the rest of North American highway system. It is the largest state in terms of land area with 586,412 square miles which is much larger than Texas, the second largest state. According to the United States Census Bureau, the estimated Alaska population as of July 1, 2008 is 686,293 which registered a 9.5% or 59,362 increase since last 2000.

The economy of the state is fueled by the oil and gas industry which makes up for more than 80% of the state’s revenues. Alaska’s main export, aside from oil and natural gas, is seafood, primarily for consumption of the state. Agriculture represents only a fraction of the Alaskan economy. There is a growing tourism industry with the state. Tourists have contributed to the economy by supporting local lodging.
